The EOS-M is very small. Much smaller than expected. And it's heavy. Heavier than a normal compact camera, even if it is not much bigger. It feels very valuable, because the body is made of an alloy of metal. The buttons are small and fiddly to use. Big hands are having trouble to setting the functions. Unfortunately there is no handle, just a small bump on the front next to the lens.
The operation should be done about the excellent touchscreen. The screen is with three inches big enough and has excellent resolution of over one million pixels. Users of iPads will appreciate that they can enlarge the images as usual with two fingers. Even wiping the sensitive screen works so that you can look at the taken photos.
The 18-55/3.5-5.6 kit lens is very well made, it is small and light. The lens has the typical Canon Image Stabilizer and works with the new Step motor STM. The STM system ensures a smooth video recording. It works absolutely silently. The image quality of the 18-55 is very good, but the light intensity is - typical for a kit lens - underwhelming. Canon offers at the moment only one other objective of EOS-M series: the EF-M 22mm with a maximum aperture of 2.0. Other lenses are not on offer, a road map does not exist. In particular there is a lack of a telephoto lens. Canon has instead offered an adapter that allows EF and EF-S lenses connected to the Canon EOS-M system. The adapter transmits all electronic data between lens and camera. The operation of the autofocus is possible.
The speed of the autofocus is slow. Comparable to the first mirrorless camera from Olympus, the E-P1. Snapshots are not easy.
A few days ago i bought an adapter from China to attach the good old Canon FD lenses on the EOS-M. More about this and the image quality in High-ISO in part two of my impressions.
